Our Story

Premium seafood, chosen the way it has been chosen here for four decades - carefully, honestly, and always at sashimi grade.

1983

CHAPTER ONE · THE BEGINNING

It began in Vancouver

Seaborn was founded in Vancouver in 1983, during Japan's economic boom. In those early years, the company catered to Japanese tourists visiting Canada, who carried home the souvenirs Canada was loved for — smoked wild salmon, maple syrup, and seaweed with fish roe.

The idea travelled well. Seaborn expanded quickly, opening branches in Toronto, Montreal, Banff and other cities — and a souvenir business began its long journey toward becoming a seafood company.

CHAPTER TOW · BY 2000

The sashimi standard

By 2000, Seaborn had found its true calling. The company began offering premium sashimi-grade seafood to Japanese restaurants and local residents across the GTA — bringing the quality chefs build menus around to home tables as well.

Sashimi is the strictest test seafood can face — there is nowhere for poor quality to hide. So it became our benchmark for everything we sell: organic salmon, wild yellowfin tuna, hamachi, tako — each fish carefully selected for freshness, colour and fat before it earns a place on our shelves.

CHAPTER THREE · 2012

Toronto, on it's own

In 2012, Seaborn Toronto became independently operated and relocated to Scarborough. From our Midland Avenue store, we kept building the reputation the name had earned — and kept expanding into the local market, one neighbourhood at a time.

Canada's cold waters stayed at the heart of the store: wild Canadian seafood, sustainably sourced — like our FAS-certified wild black cod, frozen at sea so the freshness of the catch is locked in from the moment it leaves the water.
